The founding brothers

Our story began in 1971, when five brothers—Don, Dennis, Bernard, Norman and Tyrone—opened the first Bakos Brothers store on Rissik Street in Johannesburg. Bringing together their entrepreneurial spirit and passion for elegant living, they laid the foundations for a name that would become synonymous with quality, style and personal service.

From early success in television retail to furniture and property development, the brothers shared an ambition: to bring exceptional living into people's homes. Over the decades, Bakos Brothers grew into a household name, extending its reach beyond Johannesburg and into Africa.

Yet at the heart of that growth was something deeply personal. With the family name above the door, every piece offered and every client served mattered. Attention to detail and pride in the Bakos Brothers name became the foundations of lasting relationships.

A more personal chapter

During the COVID-19 pandemic, we closed our showrooms. In the years that followed, we continued to serve a select group of private clients, working closely with them to create individual solutions for their homes.

Our showrooms had closed, but our story continued—with a more personal way of working, centred on each client's needs, tastes and way of life.

Today, we are opening that experience to you.

Introducing Bakos Private Clients
